Comicon – searching for your inner-Geek

Vulcan Costume

Spring is in the air and all the young ladies have only one thing on their mind: Comicon. There are dozens of booths and attractions that are created to dazzle the senses and spark interest. This blogger and cosplay enthusiast will be in attendance is sunny downtown Phoenix, Arizona. I’ll be joined by people of all ages and from all walks of life.

This year the media guests include: Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid), Lee Majors and James Marsters. The panels, the shopping, food trucks, beer garden and activities all create a fun pop culture event.

It’s time to embrace your inner villain, hero or character and try to dress for the job you want (and not the job you have, because when I did that at my regular job, I got sent home; I guess they don’t like cat woman).

This year, let the fun begin and join the community of cosplay starting with finding the right costume. I’ve decided to find my logical side with a Vulcan costume from True Corset paired with some minor accessories like pointy ears. It all pulled together beautifully and added a sexy kick to the idea that Captain James T. Kirk would have definitely approved of.

The beauty of a corset-based costume is the versatility that can be created with each piece, paired in a variety of ways can be worn differently extending their functionality. Phoenix Comicon will be held in the 24-acre Phoenix Convention Center on 3rd Street in Downtown Phoenix.

White shirts are a key look for spring/summer 2016. However, if you want to add a touch of sensuality and glamour to this classic look then combining it with an underbust corset is the sure fire way to look sexy while bang on trend. Here are our tips for how to pull off the perfect fashion combo:

• Keep the shirt fitted and streamlined

(Extra fabric will be difficult to conceal and may ruin the line of your corset, keep things tailored and trim to create the perfect silhouette).

• Ensure the hemline isn't too short

(If there is enough length in the shirt you can loosely layer the corset over the shirt, tug down on the shirt's hemline and once everything is smooth, you can tighten up the corset).

• Leave the fastenings that are on show open

(This look works best if your shirt is left unbuttoned to the corset, however you may like to fasten the hidden buttons to ensure that the shirt stays together).

• Make sure your shirt is brilliant white

(The key feature of this look is in the striking whiteness of the shirt. Keep it immaculate and take a bit of care when washing it to ensure that it remains pearly white).

• Team it with streamlined jeans or trousers

(This look is all about creating a beautiful silhouette so you need to be sure that your whole outfit fits to perfection. To gain more fashion points opt for blue jeans or black trousers, just make sure that they are tapered and fit well on the bum to give enviable curves).

• Add a splash of colour

(A great way to tie the whole look together is to mirror a colour from the corset in your shoes, and perhaps even your hair. *Hint: Make sure that your jeans are not overly or uncomfortably tight around the waistband, because it can cut into your hip. This makes the corset not fit as well if it was unobstructed. Excessive restriction on your natural waist can cause issues as well. So ensure you are starting with clothing that fits properly, before lacing up.

The big gathering of family that you see mostly online or the cocktail party “the ex” and everyone you know is going to attend. So, no pressure.

This season you can embrace your love of corsets while still celebrating the hottest trends of the season. Here are five stunning looks that graced the AW15 catwalks.

Monochrome

The love of monochrome has been around for a few seasons and is set to stay. The combination of striking black and white elements has a timeless elegance to it, and suits every complexion. Monochrome is beautifully versatile, being as appropriate for office wear as it is for social occasions. Monochrome is the perfect basis for a capsule wardrobe, and investing in monochrome items means you will get plenty of wear out of them. Even when the monochrome trend fades, you can still mix white and black items in with the rest of your wardrobe.

It has been a month since I started waist training so I thought I'd update you all on how it is going. It's has been a fun learning curve.

I've gradually noticed some physical changes from wearing my waist training corset and there are some adjustments I've had to get used to.

The noticeable changes are :
My rib cage has become more flexible, adapting to my corset and allowing me to pull in my waist tighter.
My natural figure is starting to contour to an hourglass silhouette even without my corset.
My tummy also seems to be a bit flatter.

The adjustments I have had to get used to are :
My body is getting used to my constant corset wear but I find I have in-prints on my skin from the boning of the corset. They go away fast, especially if you massage the area, so it is not a problem, but it is something I am getting used to. I'm hoping over time they will stop appearing.
When I am sitting for long periods of time, while wearing my corset, it's wonderful to have the extra back support. But it is not uncommon to have a bit of skin being pinched, below where my corset ends. When this becomes uncomfortable I've found it's better to loosen the bottom half of the laces, instead of taking it off all together.

I'm pleased with my progress having increased my daily wear to about 6 hours a day. I've even been taking some short naps, with my corset on.

One of the perks of wearing an overbust is that it allows you a break from wearing a bra. Though you certainly can wear a bra with an overbust, it isn't always necessary as the bonnets or cups of an overbust will generally provide enough support for you to forgo your soutien-gorge. But can an underbust provide enough support without your bra?

Overall, the answer is no. Not unless you generally don't mind going braless, whether because you prefer to be without a bra, or your bust is on the smaller side so you don't require the support a bra provides, or you've had your breasts augmented, which generally keeps them in their set place with or without a bra.

But for those of us who prefer to the assistance and support a bra provides us with, you will find that an underbust simply will not provide the same degree of support.

Though you may find that when you are wearing an underbust, and you sit down, the top edge of the corset will sit a bit higher pushing the bust up, this is not at all the same sort of support that your bra gives you.

As obvious as it sounds, an underbust does in fact go under the bust, vs. a bra which covers the bust providing support both from the band that sits beneath the bust and from the cups or bonnets which go over the bust.

So there you have: generally speaking, and underbust cannot substitute a bra but at the end of the day going with or without your bra, is a matter of personal preference.

Let's face it: virtually any form of news (whether televised, printed or online) and fitness magazine don't have anything nice to say about corsets.

They're quick to point out the "dangers" or corseting and they guffaw at the idea that the corset diet has the ability to achieve any real or lasting results.

Hmm, I wonder why that would be..? Not!

Here's my take on why these two channels of "information" are quick to stigmatize the corset:

News:

When is the last time you flipped your TV to a news channel and they were talking about something positive? I'm going to venture to guess, not very often, correct?

That's because fear or judgement based "news" is far more gripping than a report about the neighborhood dog having just had a cute litter of puppies. Instead, they talk about war, disease, economic decline and political controversy.

So if by chance they want to talk about something more light spirited, it will still have a twist to it like "what was so and so thinking when she chose that dress for the red carpet?!" or :"With corsets gaining popularity, here's what you should know about how they can actually cause you harm".

So its expected that they will jump on the "corsets are bad for you" band wagon, because its an angle that will generate more interest.

Simple as that.

Fitness magazines:

Fitness magazines have their own wealth of products and regimens that they want to sell to you. So it makes sense that they would belittle the effects of waist training or the corset diet because frankly, if I had the choice between eating the foods I love but minding my portions with the aid of my corset or following one of their super bland diets, well I think you could guess what my answer would be!

So in both cases, these "sources" of information are generally more concerned with selling their own products, services and/or trends.

And think about it: the female news anchors reporting about how corsets can hurt your body are usually propped up in high heels with shiny foreheads paralyzed from the botulism they inject every 6 or so months. And the same fitness experts pushing their HIIT workouts at you don't usually bring up the dangers that can come from over exerting your body (kidney failure, anyone?).

Therefore if you are sure to purchase a well made, well fitting corset, listen to your body as you begin your waist training and are in overall good health, then rest assured a corset will not cause you harm.

I've recently been asked if corsets constitute body modification and so I've put together this little entry on the subject, because want/don't want, the phrase "body modification" always sounds so extreme...but let's put that silly idea to rest, shall we?

If you type in "body modification" into your browser's search bar, you will most likely come up with more extreme versions of, such as piercing, tattooing, etc.

But what exactly constitutes "body modification"? Well, if we type in "definition of body modification" into Google, then we get this "In the simplest terms, “body modification” means to deliberately alter one's physical appearance, though people usually assume the phrase applies only to such practices as tattooing and piercing or the more esoteric [...]"

So forgetting the extreme end of the meaning, the answer as to whether or not corsets fall into a form of body modification, the simple answer is yes indeed they do! But then, so does exercise, dieting, pulling on a pair of control top undies, applying make-up, dying one's hair, etc.

The stigma attached to the phrase "body modification" needs to go! Last I checked, a little bit of lipstick, a mean pair of heels and a gorgeous corset to enhance one's physical appearance was not a bad thing ;)
